Examine why students often appear to learn during instruction but struggle to retain and apply skills over time. Identify how common classroom practices can create an illusion of learning, particularly for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other learning disabilities. Apply research-based strategies from cognitive science—including retrieval practice, spacing, and productive struggle—to strengthen retention and independence. Redesign instructional routines across structured literacy, writing, and content areas to move from performance in the moment to learning that lasts. Leave with practical tools and a clear framework to become a more responsive teacher, not just a deliverer of curriculum. [Please note: This session is at the Sockwell Center.]
